Bea wasn't told the particulars of his death away until she turned 13. The stage name she chose was Bea to honor her deceased father. Bea also wrote an article published in The Guardian on her family's suicide experience. Bea, along with her younger sister Sinead, were raised with Helen Moloney (n e Moloney) an ex-jockey and teacher at a secondary-school. The family was horse and race meeting obsessed. Bea was a guide at the Irish National Stud in her early teens. However, she knew, that racing wasn't what she wanted to be for a living and that she was more interested in performing.
